Insects are regarded as the most diverse of all the animal classes on planet Earth. A Remarkable Phylum - Arthropoda
However, the class Insecta makes up just part of a remarkable phylum - the Arthropoda, a phylum that can be traced back to the Cambrian geological period and in all likelihood these animals and their ancestors made up a great portion of the life that existed during the Cryptozoic, that vast eon of time, otherwise known as the Precambrian when there was life on Earth but it has left few traces in the fossil record.
A Wide Variety of Body Plans and Shapes
Arthropods have evolved to fill a vast array of environmental niches, with types of Arthropod found in most habitats - in water and on land. Crustaceans, such as crabs, lobsters, barnacles and shrimps, along with all insects, scorpions, mites, spiders and millipedes are all members of this phylum. Ten Orders of Trilobite
Ten orders of Trilobita are recognised at present, although the taxonomic classification and phylogeny of Trilobites is frequently reviewed and debated. Despite the extensive fossil record of these animals, (their exoskeletons are partly comprised of calcite and this coupled with their marine existence gives them a high potential for preservation as fossils), there are still gaps in our knowledge regarding the evolutionary relationship between different orders.
Approximately, 20,000 species of Trilobite are known, they are regarded as the standard bearer for the entire fossil record represented by Palaeozoic strata, although as a group the Trilobita were at their most diverse and abundant in the early Palaeozoic. All but one order of Trilobites were extinct by the end of the Devonian, and by the end of Permian only two families of Trilobite remained with a number of other families dying out in the mid Permian. Changes in climate, rising sea levels and the evolution of efficient predators such as sharks have all been put forward as theories to explain the demise of the Trilobite.

Surrounded by various dinosaur fossils such as bones, pieces of eggshell, gastroliths (stomach stones) and even some fossilised Sauropod poo (coprolite), in a museum, it is easy to get carried away with dinosaurs and the study of dinosaur fossils. However, over the entire fossil record, dinosaurs are not that significant in terms of their role in helping to determine the age of the order of deposition of strata. Other groups of fossils are much more significant to both geologists and palaeontologists. Perhaps it is time to reflect on the importance of Ammonites to scientists.
Ammonites Mesozoic Cephalopods
Ammonites are a large group of Mesozoic cephalopods, close relatives of squid, cuttlefish and the octopus, these are the animals that lived in flat-sided, coiled, planispiral shells (most Ammonites had these type of shells). Originating in the late Silurian, most likely from more simple, straight shelled molluscs, the Bactritoids these animals survived numerous mass extinction events and became one of the most abundant life forms in Mesozoic marine environments, along with their close cousins the Belemnites.
Ancient Marine Invertebrates
The Bactritoids (orthoconic shelled animals - means straight shells), originated sometime in the Devonian Period and persisted until the early Triassic. As well as being considered the ancestors of the Ammonites and Belemnites they are believed to be the ancestors of the soft-bodied cephalopods still around today (coleoids such as squid, octopus and cuttlefish).
Ammonites diversified during the Mesozoic and there were hundreds of different species. Their shells (made of aragonite, a form of calcium carbonate), are readily preserved under the appropriate conditions and this is why we have such an extensive fossil record of this particular Sub-Class of Cephalopods.
Common Fossils
As fossils of these creatures are very common they are important to palaeontologists and geologists as they can help identify the relative ages of different rock strata. Their diversity and rapid evolution into many forms help scientists to work out the order in which sediment strata was laid down, in this way the relative age of rocks can be calculated in relation to each other. Ammonite fossils provide a biological "key" with which palaeontologists can date the deposition of strata, in fact many layers and sequences of rocks are named after the Ammonite fossils they contain. This process of using fossils to help identify the age of deposits is known as biostratigraphy. Due to the abundance of Ammonite fossils and their world-wide distribution, rock sequences many thousands of miles apart can be dated using this method. The particular Ammonite fossils associated with each layer of rock are called "zonal fossils". Dinosaur fossils in contrast, do not make good zonal fossils. They are very rare, usually found as incomplete and not laid down in a marine environment only very occasionally can dinosaur remains be considered as potential zonal fossils - the Hypsilophodon bed on the Isle of Wight being a possible example.
Mass Extinction Event at the End of the Cretaceous
Towards the end of the Cretaceous the Ammonites as a group began to decline. The fossil record shows that there were fewer and fewer genera (although some evolved into very bizarre and ornate forms in the late Cretaceous). The group went extinct along with the Belemnites at approximately the same time as the dinosaurs. Why this particular group died out, yet the similar looking Nautilus survived is unclear. There are two species of Nautilus around today, indeed, our studies of these animals have helped fill in the gaps in our knowledge about Ammonites. One theory as to why the Nautilus survived whilst the Ammonites died out is that on close examination the shell of Nautiloids are thicker than that of Ammonites. Modern day Nautilus live in relatively deep water, Ammonites seem to have been a creature of shallow seas. The thicker shells of the Nautiloids are able to withstand the greater water pressure at depth.
Destruction of the Marine Environment
If the marine environment had been subjected to a prolonged period of darkness (dust in the atmosphere from a meteorite impact for example), then the photosynthesising plankton would have died off and this would have broken up the food chain. The deeper living Nautiloids may have been better able to cope than the surface dependent Ammonites. Also, such environmental impacts would have severely disrupted the breeding cycles and destroyed much of the larval stage populations. This too could have contributed to the Ammonite extinction. In addition, if large ammonites of carbon dioxide sulphur hydroxide had been deposited in the seas, this would have led to extensive acidification of shallow, marine environments and this may have prevented the Ammonites from being able to form their shells properly - again helping to reduce the population of these animals. These factors along with the rapidly evolving new Teleost fish (modern fish) which may have predated on Ammonites and the competition from other cephalopods may have resulted in the extinction of this very important, and once diverse animal group.

Lion - The Most Social Animal Out of All Cats

Lions are the second largest living cats today. Though they were spread all over the world at one time, they are limited to Sub Saharan Africa and a few areas of Asia today. Even the available population of these animals is endangered due to loss of their habitat as a result of human activities. During the past two decades alone the population of these majestic animals has come down by 30 to 50%.
In the wild a lion may live 10 to 15 years. Generally, a male will live only around 10 years as they often get injured fighting with other males. In captivity there have been occasions where they have lived up to 20 years. They normally live in grasslands and savannas. However, they could be found in forests also. They are highly social animals. A pride of lions consists of a few females that are related and a few males. They live together and hunt as a pack. It is the females that do the hunting.
Lion is the tallest of cats being at least 5.5 inches taller than a tiger. However, a lion is not as strong as a tiger. Color of these animals varies from light brown to reddish. They are animals that have distinctive differences between the males and the females of the species. The male lion has a shaggy main and the female doesn't have one. Even the roles of the males and the females in the pride are different. It is the females that do the hunting.
When it comes to the lifestyle of lions it is noticed that they either live in groups that are called prides and confine to certain territories or roam the jungles as lone animals. This second type of animals is called nomads. While the lionesses do the hunting the lions look after the territory. When the cubs are born they are nursed by the mothers. Once the males grow up they are abandoned by mothers. These grown up cubs that become adult males become nomads.
Though lions are carnivorous animals they are not able to run fast for long distances. Therefore, they need to close on a prey stealthily until they come as close as 30 meters to the prey. Once they close on a heard of animals they select the closest animal and chase after it. Often they surround the animal on a few sides to make it easy to catch the prey. It is the hunters that eat the flesh of the prey first.

What Fish Should I Use in My Aquaponics System?

If you are familiar with aquaponics, then you may be asking the question, "What Fish are the best for my system?" Good question. The answer depends on what you are planning to do with the fish, and how big your system is. There are several key environmental factors that will drive what fish you should raise for your aquaponics system. They are:
• Must be capable of reproducing in captivity
• Must have well-known requirements as far as how they are raised
• Must be adaptable to having other species in the tank
• Must grow fairly quickly and to a large size
• Must be tolerant of crowding and high density conditions (living in a tank)
• Must have high survival or low mortality rates when raised in a contained environment
• Should be resistant to disease and parasite infestations
• Should not be cannibalistic or territorial because that would cause obvious problems in the tank
• Should be easy to acquire on the market as eggs, fingerlings, or adults
• If you are going to sell the fish, they should have a high market demand
• Should product a good amount of feces.
• If you are going to sell them, they should be good as a food source.
These limitations drive out a select list of fish that make the good aquaculture resource. The best fish to use in your tank are:
Small Home System:
• Goldfish

Goldfish and Carp are the easiest to use in your tank because you can find them in any pet store. Because they are so common, and are purchased as pets, they are easy to take care of. They are obviously not going to be eaten by most of us, so you won't have to worry about replenishing them.
Tilapia is a warm water freshwater fish. If you have eaten in any local restaurant, you have probably seen Tilapia on the menu. Its flesh is white, moist and mild flavoured. Purchased as fingerlings, they are ideal for aquaculture because they are very fast growing. As a warm water fish, you will have extra costs from heating the tank. As far as what they eat, they are omnivorous, eating a variety of plants and animals. With Tilapia, you will be able to raise fish to eat, while at the same time growing plants to eat.
Channel Catfish are another common fish used in Aquaponics. Less of a delicacy than the Tilapia, the catfish is still a unique dish served in restaurants. Catfish are more commonly raised because of their versatility. They are less susceptible to temperature changes than Tilapia. They can handle cold water growing well below 70 degrees, and will keep growing when the water temp is hotter. They are very fast growing. To feed the channel catfish, you will need a protein pellet mixture. They will also eat live food such as molluscs, insect larvae, and worms. The resulting meat of harvested aquaculture raised catfish is tender and good tasting and lacking in that "muddy" flavour that you might find in a catfish caught in the wild.
Arctic Char are a unique cold water, freshwater fish. They have qualities of a salmon, and also that of a trout, and because of this, they are a sought after fish by many a chef. They are typically fed nutrient dense dry pellets. In the winter, in the cold arctic, they gather close together in the open pockets in the ice making them accustomed to very close quarters. This makes them used to living in close quarters, and ideal for aquaculture.

Shark the Fish With Cartilaginous Skeleton

Sharks are fish that live in groups. They have a special characteristic of having skeletons made up of cartilages. It is believed that they have been roaming the seas for the past 420 million years. There are around 400 different species of shark today. The smallest one is around 6.7 inches in length. The largest one, the whale shark could grow up to be 39 ft long. They are found in almost all seas and their habitat is between the surface and up to 2000 feet under water.
Sharks have a covering on their skins that protect their skins from parasites and from damage. Most of them are hunters and they have very good hunting skills. If surrounded by a school of sharks in the sea, even a human is not safe. However, due to various human activities including fishing, the number of fish belonging to some species is coming down.
Sharks have very good sense of smell. They are able to detect one part per million of blood in sea water. Also, they are able to detect the direction of the smell. It is done by the timing of the nostrils getting the smell. Even the eyesight of this fish is similar to other vertebrates. Therefore, they are able to see things very well.
Sharks keep them afloat due to their low density skeleton made of cartilages. Also they have a liver that is able to keep them afloat as it is large and is filled with oil. The liver of one of these fish is so large that it constitutes 30% of its body mass. However, they cannot sleep for long as they will sink to the bottom of the sea as they don't have the gas bladders like other fish to keep them afloat.
Sharks have brain to body mass ratios similar to those of mammals. Sometimes they show curiosity. This may be due to their intelligence.
These fish normally swim at speeds of around 8 kilometers per hour. However, when they attack their prey they might achieve speeds up to 30 kilometers per hour.

Monkey - A Primate Closest to Man

Spread in many regions of the world, monkeys are animals that often climb trees. However, there are ones that stay on the ground also. Baboons belong to this type. There are 260 known living species of them today. They eat leaves, fruits, flowers, insects and small animals. They are considered intelligent animals. Generally, they have tails but there are also ones that do not have tails.
The smallest monkeys are only 5-6 inches long with their tails and they weigh only around 4 to 5 oz. Pygmy Marmoset is one such monkey. The largest ones may be 3.3 ft in length and they may weigh as much as 77 pounds. Mandrill belongs to this group. Some of these animals have tails that help them hold onto trees and branches.
The tails of moneys appear to have adopted to suit their environments. Most of these primates that live in South American forests have prehensile tales which could be used to grasp objects. But those live in Africa and South Asia don't have such tails. The thick forests of South America make them necessary as the monkeys often will live on top of trees. In the not so thick forests of South East Asia and Africa the need doesn't arise as they often are on the ground.
When you consider the anatomy of animals you will notice that tails are only possible with vertebrates. But even scorpions have tale like structures. However, only vertebrates have prehensile tails. These tails have special areas that have no hair to make it easier to grasp objects. They are called the friction pads.
Monkeys often have relationship with humans. Some are raised as pets. There are others used for experiments. In certain agricultural regions they become pests damaging crops. In certain places monkey gather where tourists visit. Such animals are also considered pests. There have been occasions where tourists are attacked by them.

They have faster reproductive cycles enabling them to bring test results quicker. While some of these animals are bred in captivity others are caught in the wild. Using Fish Effluent to Grow Your Food

Do you know that you can use the waste products from your fish tank to grow food that you can eat? Well this is obviously a rhetorical question, because you can. This process is called Aquaponics. What is it exactly? It is the combination of aquaculture (raising fish), and hydroponics (growing food without soil). This is a very cool process and you can actually do it in your own backyard, with stuff you can find at your local home store.
How does it work?
Basically, you take the water from a fish tank, remove the solid matter from it, and use that water to provide nutrients to plants that you have floating on foam beds with their roots dangling in the water. The process is very simple, and is self-sustaining apart from some evaporation of your water source.
First you need a fish tank. A simple plastic container that holds drinking water will do. All you need to do is cut it in half, and follow the instructions from your local pet store about raising gold fish or carp. They will advise you of the temperature of the water you need to keep, and the food and environment you need to keep the fish healthy.
Next you need a grow bed for the plants. You can place the plants in a piece of Styrofoam insulation with holes cut through it, or you can purchase a product called "Perlite" which is a volcanic white pebble that absorbs water and provides a growing ground for bacteria.
Simply place the seedlings of the plants into the holes, and allow their roots do dangle through them. You then take the water from the fish tank, and pump it into the grow bed via a reservoir, and allow it to trickle through the roots of the plants where it is then pushed back into the fish tank.
This is a very short summary to give you an idea of how to do this. I am leaving out a lot of the detail.
Why do this?
One reason people do this, is because of the incredible organic plants they can grow. You can grow practically any edible species of plant this way: Lettuce, Jalapeno peppers, tomatoes, etc. They taste great and are not loaded with pesticides.
Another reason to do this is for the fish products. If you create a little larger fish tank, and are a little more aggressive with your system, you can grow fish like: Tilapia, Trout, and even Arctic Char. These are fish that you can eat or even sell.

Flower - One Of the Most Important Parts Of a Flowering Plant

When it comes to the plant kingdom, flowering plants are the most developed plants and flower is the base for their sexual reproduction. When they get pollinated, the fruits and seeds result. Finally, they also get spread through animals and wind in order to spread the plants. In order to attract animals and birds to facilitate pollination most flowers have become attractive and there are others that have fragrances.
Though the scientific need of a flower for a plant is its reproduction, most often they are used by people for decorative purposes. Use of flowers for such purposes has been practiced from ancient times. They are used for decorating homes day to day and also on events such as weddings. If you look at a flower carefully you will find several parts. Normally it will be located at the end of a short stem. The outermost part is the calyx. It is the one encloses the bud. Normally, it has five lobes and is of green color. Next is the corolla that has the petals. Then you have the stamens that consist of stalks and filaments. Finally, the innermost part of the flower is there. It is called the Gynoecium and it has the carpel on which pollen has to fall for the flower to be pollinated. At its bottom you get the ovaries.
Unlike animals, plants are not able to move in search of mates. Instead, they attract insects and animals to get their flowers pollinated. Most flowers produce honey in order to attract insects. When insects go in search of honey in a flower the pollen will fall on them and when they go to another flower they pollinate it without their knowledge. There are also some flowers that have developed mechanisms to get their pollination done through air.
There is the possibility of cross pollinating flowers in order to produce bigger and more attractive ones. Also it is used for the creation of hybrid plants. Very often this method is used for the development of high yielding varieties of rice paddies. Parts of A Plant and Their Function

Introduction:
Plants that regenerate from a flower, known as angiosperms, are typically categorized as monocot or dicot. The terms indicate whether the seed products will develop with one or two leaves. Monocot and dicot are differences that can help us identify the different types of plant parts.
Main Idea:
Plants are in existence, just like people and creatures. We know this because all living things do certain things:
• They need energy, nutritional value, air, and water.
• They generate young.
• They develop and die.
• They respond to what's around them.
• They are formed of cells.

Plants generate from seeds. Each seed contains a small plant awaiting for the right circumstances to emerge, or begin to grow.
Seeds delay to emerge until three needs are met: water, correct heat temperature i.e, warmness, and a good location such as in soil. During its initial stages of growth, the seedling is based upon the food resources stored with it in the seed until it is large enough for its own leaves to begin making food through a process known as photosynthesis. The seedling's roots forcibly push down into the soil to secure the new plant and to absorb water and nutritional value from the soil. And its stem with simply new leaves pushes up towards the light.
The germination level stops when a capture comes out from the ground. But to obtain a plant is not done growing. It's just started. Vegetation needs water, comfort, nutritional value from the ground, and mild to increase.
Parts of a Plant:
1) Roots:
Roots act like straws taking in water and nutritional value from the ground. Tiny main hairs keep out of the main root, assisting in the intake. Roots help to core to obtain in the ground so it does not fall over. Roots also store extra food for future use.
Function:

Stems do many factors. They support to obtain a plant. They act like the plant's watering system, performing water and nutritional value from the origins and food in the form of glucose from the simple departs to other plant parts. Arises i.e., stems can be herbaceous like the versatile control of a flower or woodsy like the back area of an oak shrub.

Function:
• The stem control has boats that transportation sap and water throughout the plant.
• Sap is a nutrient-rich liquid that contains a lot of sugar.

Function:

4) Flowers:
Flowers are the reproduction aspect of most plants. Flowers contain plant pollen and small eggs known as ovules. After pollination of the flower and feeding of the ovule, the ovule produces into a fruit.
Function:
• The flower is the main part of reproduction in blooming plants.
• The male aspect of the flower is the stamen composed of the anther where plant pollen is created and the slim filament.
• The female aspect of the flower is the pistil composed of the stigma, and the ovary.
• Pollination happens when plant pollen is relocated by bugs or wind from the anther to the stigma. Substances known as minerals 'drill' a route down through the design to the ovary where the egg is.
• Fertilization happens when the plant pollen connects with the egg. After this, a seed product creates inside a fruit.
• Germination is the procedure when a seed develops into a plant.

Plants have modifications to help them endure, live and grow in different areas. Adaptations are special features that allow a plant or animal to reside in a particular environment. These modifications might make it very difficult for the plant to survive in a different place.

Bluebirds, Juncos, Robins, Crows

Bluebirds
used to be as common as robins. They were lauded in poems and songs. But then, in the mid 20th century a combination of very bad winters and industrialization caused the bluebird to decline in numbers, almost to extinction. Thanks to conservation efforts, including the establishment of numerous bluebird trails, bluebirds are once again becoming common in the United States. Bluebirds and beloved because of their familial habits. The male bluebird will feed the female who will feed the babies while they are nestlings. The male may even recruit some of his older children from the first nesting of the season to help out. If something happens to the male, then the female takes over. Other females help her. It is not uncommon to see three or more birds taking food to a single nest.

Juncos - snow birds - are the most common birds at bird feeders. They spend summers in Northern Canada and migrate to the United States for winter. They don't usually take food directly from feeders, however. Rather they forage food from the ground, picking up seeds that have fallen out of the feeder.
Robins are true generalists and have adapted well to living around humans. They inhabit any land with an abundant supply of fruits, berries, and in the breeding seaons, worms. Their adaptability has made robins far more prevalent today than before white people moved to the New World.
Crows and loud and noisy birds, but some of the most intelligent of the bird species. They are able to use tools, and can go through at least a two step process to use a tool to get to a tool that they can then use to get to food.
